ADAM

Away from the constant pulsating beats in Exit, my headache eases and I follow Asher into the bar Hanna is having her bachelorette party at. Crashing your fiancée’s last hurrah is not what most guys would do and it’s definitely not something the old Asher—the Asher I used to know, who didn’t have jealous bone in his body—would do. But Asher is not the same guy I used to know, who was only focused on school and making money. The guy next to me wouldn’t think twice about giving an organ or limb to Hanna, and his only goal is to marry her despite the fact we are only in our sophomore year of college. I don’t get the rush, unless Asher’s family is cursed like mine. I look over at Asher and he’s oblivious to the three girls standing in front of him, flipping and twirling their hair all in the hopes of getting his attention. Back in high school, Asher would have smiled and made small talk, but tonight he’s doggedly looking for Hanna.

Asher turns around and says, “I don’t see them, do you?”

I step down and come shoulder to shoulder with Asher. “Yeah. They’re at the bar chatting with the same fucking guy from the pic Hanna sent.”

Asher looks over to the bar and his gaze locks on Hanna. He smiles at the girls blocking our way and says, “Excuse us.” He doesn’t wait for me, just marches toward the bar.

The blonde in the group who I’ve avoided making eye contact with steps in front of me, and I miss my opportunity to follow Asher.

Trailing her finger along the neckline of her top, she asks, “What’s your friend's name?”

“Taken.” I smile and slip away. It is gratifying to be able to finally repay Asher for all the times he saved me. It must have been exhausting to be my friend. Regret burns in my chest. I can’t do anything to change the past.

Ducking and dodging tipsy women, I make my way to Cassie. The guy behind the counter is clearly making moves on my girlfriend, who is smiling and actually conversing with him. Cassie never talks to guys unless she absolutely has to. I want to drive my fist through the bastard's jaw.

Asher reaches them first and before he even greets Hanna, he reaches around her and takes the shot sitting on the counter in front of her and the one in front of Cassie. Asher is a lightweight, so he’ll definitely be feeling the effects soon.

“Hey!” Hanna spins and comes face-to-face with a very angry Asher.

“Time to go, babe.” Asher slides the empty shot glass back on the counter and then shifts to his left, blocking my view of Cassie.

Something I’ve never experienced before propels me forward and just before my hand grabs Asher’s shirt, Hanna steps up and says, “What took you so long?”

I have an above-average IQ but I feel like an idiot as I stare back at Hanna. She wanted us to crash her party? She used me, but why not just call Asher directly? Pride.
